The $6.8m redevelopment of Rolla Square in Sharjah will be completed by the beginning of 2012, according to Sharjah Municipality director general Sultan Al Mualla.

“The project forms part of a larger redevelopment drive underway in the emirate,” said Al Mualla. Rolla Square is a historical site in Sharjah, named after the planting of the first banyan tree, known locally as a Rolla tree, in the 1800s.

“We have developed a unique architectural plan for the square that meets modern standards and preserves the emirate's heritage and Islamic architectural styles,” said Al Mualla.

Rolla Square covers 36,664m². The municipality intends for 60% of the area to be landscaped, with the remaining 40% used for footpaths and fountains.
