The Bingham Canyon Mine is an open cast copper mine, the deepest in the world. It's owned by the Rio Tinto group, and has been in constant production since 1906. The mine is 1.2km deep, 4km wide and covers an area of around 770 hectares. The mine produces around 300,000 tons of copper and more than 11 tons of gold annually.
