Canada's Diavik Diamond Mine began construction in 2001 and production started in January 2003. A joint venture between British-Australian firm Rio Tinto and Canadian firm harry Winston Diamond Corporation, the mine has a lifespan of 16-22 years. Open pit mining is expected to cease in 2012, after which time Diavik will be a totally underground mine. Underground mining operations are expected to continue beyond 2020. The mine, which has a current footprint of approximately 10 square kilometres, is projected to produce over 100 million carats of diamonds.
